In my book Ren feels like he has no chance of being adopted. Like it says here " the man tried not to stare but glanced in horror. " This quote is talking about when the farmer saw that Ren's arm was not there. Ren knows that the odds are very slim. If he doesn't get adopted before he turns 18, he will be sent into the army.
I feel like this situation may be common for a lot of kids all around the world. They may not have any problems, but they might feel like there Is no way they will ever get adopted. I still predict though, that Ren will either escape the home or he will get adopted by a thief. Hence the name The Good Thief.
